Satellite technology is different because you have the master headquarters (satellite dish with receivers) right there at your home! 

The cable runs to your TVS/receivers are feet long instead of miles.  This is a huge advantage over Cable TV, to support far more HD channels!

Better Picture Quality...

You will find that satellite technology is always on the cutting edge of picture quality.  Dish Network was the first to offer 1080p (like Blue-ray) picture quality.  DirecTV is the first to offer 3D channels.  Both of them being satellite TV, will continue raise the bar against each other for many years to come.

More Channels...

There are just way more channels offered by satellite TV companies like Dish Network and DirecTV.  This is again due to shorter runs of cable offering a higher bandwidth to support more channels in better quality....

More Options and different packages...

Because there is more bandwidth to provide channels and services than cable, there are many more options in terms of packages.  This can benefit you in a number of ways...You can get more channels in more categories like sports, special interest, news and international channels.  DirecTV is the leader in sports packs, Dish is the leader in just about everything else...

Better than IPTV...

Internet Protocol TV or TV over the internet doesn't have the same bandwidth as satellite TV.  Which means they are unable to keep up to the same quality standards as satellite TV.
